The Lion Rock Symposia aim to regularly bring together people who would like to discuss over a good meal the foundations and prospects of liberty. Each event will have a topic, but the content will be drawn from the insights and interests of participants. To ensure conviviality, we are limited to one table.

Hong Kong has always been a transport hub and meeting place for people from around the world. It has been a pioneer in cable cars (Peak Tram), trams, mass transit (MTR) and competitive bus and ferry franchises. Taxi and minibus routes have long provided flexible employment and upward mobility. Airports have been spectacular (Kai Tak) and are now world-leading. The city was a container shipping and port automation pioneer. It has continued to extend arteries into China through bridges and very fast trains. The transport payments system (Octopus) was a world leader in small value contactless payments. EV penetration in HK is amongst the highest in the world. Little wonder that Uber developed rapidly in Hong Kong, despite legal ambiguity.
- Long a transport leader, how will human mobility develop in Hong Kong as electric alternatives become predominant and self-driving a reality?
- As human mobility takes its first steps to other planets and then the stars, is there a role for the people of Hong Kong on a very different future for transport?
- Will legacy carparks remain a good investment?
- Are efforts to change taxi licensing futile? Should the government withdraw where markets are providing better answers?
Don’t miss this unparalleled opportunity to dig deeply into the future of major cities, garner enlightenment and explore strategic foresight from an engaging conversation in a relaxed setting.
